NGL, I'd prefer to go back to IRC if I gotta drop down to matrix. I have a matrix account for only one thing and I dislike using it otherwise. I have so many fond memories of using irssi and setting up relay servers. If someone could just build a new frontend for IRC with a set of servers for Voice/Video bitstreams, I think that would be the most enjoyable experience for me. I think I'm gonna abstain from blogging on this issue since I'd have very little to add other than ranting about privacy policies and people making stated alternatives like Root or TeamSpeak which are just as damning as Discord if not worse. As well as the main value of Discord as a hub for community events or news for things like Vtubers or games. I really doubt I will be marked as a teen unless their purpose is as people have noticed and it's just all about data harvesting and building a profile index for the US Government like China does with their social credit system. Congratulations on keeping with the JP studying habit! Don't burn yourself out with too many extra things though!

Stumbled upon your "discord age verification post". I never went to matrix, didn't have a use case for it, nor friends to talk to there, but I've always been curious about it. It's been talked about in circles around me forever, although I've used other F/OSS / decentralized tools. I relate, I also have a lurker style personality. Which has made communicating to people and pursuing the rapidly changing tech space all the more difficult. So, I'd like to thank you for having a guestbook for me to leave a message here. Good luck with learning Japanese! What helped me immensely(!) when I started learning Japanese, and I would similarly like to pass this tip on to you: take an elementary course (or whatever equivalent form you prefer) in Chinese--at least, if you ever want to learn Kanji in any meaningful way. When I was first told this, I didn't want to take a break from learning the language I wanted to learn ... all in service of learning a different language, that I didn't want to learn at the time, but when I came around to it, the impact it had was unmistakable. The lack of a native phonetic alphabet there made learning hanzi (kanji) pure survival to communicate and engage at all, so within months (off of at minimum 20-30 minutes a day) I had learned 500 kanji. It really put into perspective how little progress I was making before, when I had started with the daunting prospects of learning from a collection of thousands of kanji whose relevance I had no idea to make of, removed from the country it was used in, on top of two phonetic alphabets and two major readings per individual character (bonus if some inexplicable third or archaic fourth reading comes into play for no conceivable, sane reason whatsoever) to juggle. I think it might help all the other pieces fall into place for you otherwise, at worst, you'll need to brush up on different readings (occasionally, you also get some neat mappings; ex: 電話 as denwa/diànhuà or 水 as sui/shuǐ, but you shouldn't expect it to be the cheat code for on'yomi because that was not a uniform process), but you'll never have to guess what the meaning of the characters are from looking at them, which I personally find invaluable. But also, maybe I'm crazy and this only worked for me, specifically.

i loved your blog post on the musings about social media! i feel like we have pretty similar perspectives on it since we're similar age and if i had to guess had similar aspects about growing up on the internet. i also hate how much of the online space has become about engagement, engagement, engagement with ragebaiting and now vagueposting (which PISSES ME OFF btw oh my god) and the online discourse around fandom spaces as well, like you briefly touched on. every time i try to participate in a space like that (especially on x) smth in me feels like its life source is being drained lmao. anyway i am rambling a little bit but all this to say i'm looking forward to your retrospective as a veteran(?) of the indie web hehe. i'll be adding your button to my site!

your latest blogpost (musings on social media) i agree with wholeheartedly... i've had very similar thoughts around socmed discussion on indieweb, as well as minors bringing the twitter/whatever discourse to their websites. that "plur does not include proship" site i saw too and its laughably stupid but also made me feel really disillusioned with just how many kids are bringing that type of stuff to indie web... niche spaces won't ever be the same after the era of algorithms and the boosting of drama and discourse done by these same algorithms just because it drives up clicks, and then leading to too many people (especially developing kids/teens) becoming hateful and discoursebrained... i wish the society of today was much more calm
